Re: Genuine CQR - 35# - FRESH WATER - $250

While you've got it handy: You could perhaps settle a controversy which is currently running about whether genuine CQR anchors have a lead ballasted tip:

If you turn it upside down, and tap the part which fits in between the ploughshares: is it steel, or is there a portion which is lead ? (Or a port into which lead could have been poured?)

And do you know approximately what year it would have been made?

TIA

It's kind of dark to be able to really tell about a lead tip. I suppose it's possible but not obvious to me. As for age, I really don't know. The anchor came with the boat and I believe the most recent po bought it. My guess is less than 10 years.

Thanks very much for going to the trouble of posting that extra photo:

it's identical with mine (which is the same size, in similar condition ie mint, but twenty years older)

What your photo clearly shows is the drop-forged high tensile steel toe backing piece, (the central seam shows where the two forging dies meet, producing a characteristic "flash" of protruding metal which extrudes into the gap) and the fillet welds connecting it to the ploughshares.

There's no place there for any lead to be hiding.

Andrew - Don't pass up this wonderful opportunity to have matching "mint" CQR's on your bow. You'd certainly be the envy of your fellow sailors. No problem with the photo.

You're right, it does seem as if they were made for each other, despite the age difference.
