I make floating heaving lines out of 3 strand poly (breaking strength- 175 lbs.) tied with a monkey fist with 2 oz. lead ballast to make them fly, whippings and splices, and a velcro hanger. They weigh 1 lb. and I get $30 bucks USD for them. They are seven fathoms long. They can be used as a messenger line for passing a towing hawser to another vessel without crunching hulls together, rescuing a person in the water or in a kayack heading for the rocks. Any one can make this item, but I do for those persons who don't want to. See a photo of one in my profile album. I also make other handmade nautical items such as thump mats and stair mats out of appropriate materials. I can ship these items to you by post. These floating heaving lines are very salty.
