Help Bringing 2 Long But Light Sticks From FL to NY?

hello all,

i recently bought a UK lazy cradle here on this forum. i'm in Brooklyn and the seller is in FL. shipping the fabric was easy and that part is great, but there are two fiberglass battens that couldn't ship that i would still like to get my hands on; they are 12 foot long each and i would prefer not to have to cut/splice them but no shipping service i asked would ship anything that long. so:

if anyone is planning to make a trip from Florida up north (either heading to New York, or passing by in a way that would make it possible for me to meet up) before the sailing season starts here in April-May, and would be ever so kind as to bring them up for me, or knows of a shipping service that wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg for doing that, i would really appreciate your help!

incidentally, ordering new ones here in NYC from UK Sails directly is prohibitively expensive (at least for me): it would run smth like $12/foot, and although this sounds like daylight robbery - that may be very close to "cost to them including shipping".

i am currently exploring all reasonable options and their costs.

thank you!
anton

I would contact a car carrier company that has enclosed trailers. They might just be able to tack them on a load of cars they are already taking north.

Ask the post office if they will "ship". If so, just tape together, add a labe and "mail." I have shipped several odd shaped items that way.

What you need is an LTL shipper, less than truck load. Google "freight quote". There are a bunch of companies online that will get shipping quotes for you from several different trucking companies. We often receive 12 foot long sections of stainless rub rail. It's strapped to a board to keep it from getting bent in shipping.

Silversailor, ups or FedEx will ship tubes to 6' which means cutting. I want to avoid that.

Hopcar, Jim Walsh - thank you, will look into it. The quotes I got so far are north of 250$ which is close to getting new ones from uk sails. Really? So expensive??

Try having the seller "coil" the battens then shipping won't be that much.

Florida is a big place, about a 14-16 hour drive from one end to the other. Where in Florida are these things?

Hi Anton,

You can easily ship these with a commercial trucking company but yes it will cost about $250 or so. That's pretty much the minimum charge for this kind of service. As far as I know, unless you can find someone to carry them for you I don't know of any cheaper option.

Coil? They are round sticks almost an inch in diameter. They flex some but don't really bend...

Can't you make them from some kind of wood or plastic pipe or something else. Somebody made those. Mac

Stupid question, How do sailmakers receive and ship battens to customers?
