"Icom IC M802 Made Simple for Cruisers"

Looking to purchase "Icom IC M802 Made Simple for Cruisers"
(Operating Procedures only!) Near Cairns or in AUS.
I have an Icom IC M802 on my cat and have never used for one year , because I don't know how, or even if the thing works.
I am starting from absolute zero knowledge. So I am looking for Terry,s book "Icom IC M802 Made Simple for Cruisers"
(Operating Procedures only!) somewhere In Aus
If there are any cruisers near Cairns that has one of these units , and thinks they can spare some time to teach me the basics , maybe we could meet up.
Don't think it has a modem , or have not seen anything resembling one.
Terry,s book would be a good start I think.
Cheers Darren

Hi Peewee,
There is a guy on here (John I think) with the call sign ka4wja who has quite a few clips on YouTube that will help you get started.
I am in a similar position in Scotland. My wife and I are just about to retire to go sailing and we have an 801 which has basically the same head unit.

All the best
Colin

Re: "Icom IC M802 Made Simple for Cruisers"

Don't feel badly. I don't know a single electronics EXPERT who can walk up to an M-802 for the first time and use it easily. It doesn't work like any other SSB radio.

For example, I generally have some 25 SSB's in my home/shop and have been an active licensed ham for decades. Still, when I haven't used an 802 for awhile, it takes me a little time to get back into the swing. This is not true of any other HF radio I've ever encountered: ham, military, marine, aircraft, etc. The M-802 is truly in a class by itself.

That said, when you become familiar with the radio and use it frequently, you'll find the Icom M-802 to be an excellent performer, both on transmit and on receive. And, it's relatively easy to use on both the marine bands and the ham bands.

John, KA4WJA, has produced a series of videos on the M-802 and related SSB issues. These are excellent. They are available on YouTube.

A good easy to read manual for operation of the M-802 was written by Capt. Marty Brown, specifically because the M-802 manual is pretty terrible. The book can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/ICOM-M802-Radi.../dp/0971564043

Time to start having a play.
Will let you know if I succeed in learning anything, or operating , or chatting.
Thanks Darren.
