The sailing blog sphere is full of stories where boat issues interrupted voyages after a few months, even if the sailors weren't circumnavigating -- and this is AFTER some element of refit.

Boat condition should be right up there with boat reputation on a potential voyager's list.

Great blog, by the way. I can see it being helpful to other boat restorers/cruisers...
Your point is well taken. I suppose I'm saying... If we were going to do just something near civilization, I might not have replaced the motor. Sure it would be really a bummer when the starter needed replacement, but it wouldn't be as bad as having a starter fail in the middle of no where in the Indian Ocean, etc. Same with a lot of the electrical wires. I mean if you're pretty much always around other cruisers and always a few days from someplace with people, you can afford to have a light that doesn't work for a few days. I'm not saying it is right, but its a far cry from being in no-man's land in the middle of an ocean with gear failing. So I do agree with you, I was just trying to point out the shades of grey.

And thank you for the compliment.

This is correct. Spend every minute you can looking. You may find someone who really wants to sell and has a boat that just needs cosmetics. Bring someone really knowledgable about the boats with you so that you are comfortable with just what the challenges you may face consist of.

You can still Westsail the World!

Good luck!

This could be true, but a Westsail hull is definately a good thing to build on.
Building on a Westsail hull is definately going somewhere regardless of the costs.

To the OP,
Is cash your problem? If so, look very hard and visit some Westsail owners and if you have some integrity you will find a decent opportunity to aquire a fair boat mildly cruisable for about $15k with owner financing. It can be done.
If cash isn't your problem I'll sell you mine for $40k.
Hehe, just kidding, I'm dying in mine.

I feel you on this. We love our boat and can't imagine ever selling her.
