Looking for westsail 32

I'm hoping to find a Westsail 32 that is in critical condition. And need a restoration. Thanks

Extrapolating from your post I am guessing you also mean cheap?

Have you looked at the Westsail web site. Bud Taplin is the expert in all things Westsail and many for sale are listed there or post links to where they are for sail.

Look in Latitude 38. There is one in Half Moon Bay, Ca. for $25K, asking.

There were two located in the Pacific Northwest that appeared on craigslist awhile back. Check out craigslist from time to time. They do appear there.
kind regards,

Unless you get parts and labour for free, don't buy a boat to restore. Boat prices are way down, but parts and labour prices are still high. Better to buy a boat that someone else has already restored. You'll save a ton of money.

My $0.02

Absolutely right on. Yard labor here is $107 an hour. if you're not handy, that good deal soon gets sour.

Re: Looking for westsail 32

The cheapest Westsail could eventually wind up being the most expensive Westsail.

In fact, this is a likelihood.

Proceed with caution.

Re: Looking for westsail 32

Sethx, I have to agree with Kenomac & letsgetsailing3, once you buy a boat needing lots of work that will convert to lots of money, every time. If this is your first project working on a sailboat, I would start with a small cheap dingy, even they will pull on your purse strings if you do a good job.

Talk to a boatyard worker first about the cost.

I am looking for a Westsail myself, but I can’t see putting so much time into the boat like the one I linked for you, that just takes away from the time I have to sail her.

However, if you are just looking for a project as you said, and cost is no issue, then the Westsail is a well built slow but tough boat.

Fair winds & calm seas

Re: Looking for westsail 32

The cost of refit is largely based on your needs. We bought our W32 for 30k and expect to be in it for 90K by the time we're done, but then... We're replacing everything in expectation of voyage cruising. If we had just planned to bum around the caribbean we probably would have just "made do" with some of the stuff we're replacing now since we fear attempting to fix in the middle of no where.

Full accounting of our costs are published here (current through engine + electrical refit)
Cost to sail around the world | Sundowner Sails Again

We have yet to publish the rigging costs since we're still working on that.

True, but having a broken boat in the middle of the Caribbean sucks, too. It sucks the life right out of a cruising kitty.

The sailing blog sphere is full of stories where boat issues interrupted voyages after a few months, even if the sailors weren't circumnavigating -- and this is AFTER some element of refit.

Boat condition should be right up there with boat reputation on a potential voyager's list.

Great blog, by the way. I can see it being helpful to other boat restorers/cruisers...
