To clarify: I find the prices quoted for new MOB poles quite outrageous so I hope someone is having an unused one or has decided to quit off shore sailing. Tips for a cheap source are also welcome.

That is an idea. I thought that fishermen wouldn't pay 200 dollars to mark their nets!

Fisherman can pay a lot more than @200 with GPS, alert beacons, strobes, etc.

Go to a bait and tackle shop, get a blank 16' surf rod and make your own. Mine has a 3' square safety green flag on top, a float 3' up from the bottom, a weight and water activated battery on the bottom with 2 wires running inside the rod to the top where there is a strobe light mounted which turns on when battery hits the water.

I think I've got one in my store that I've been looking at for a long time. I'd love to make you a deal on it. When I get to work tomorrow I'll check and let you know. As I recall it is a two piece pole made by Jim-Buoy.

Usen marine stores are a good place for those. A rod blank with a crab float is a good idea.

Re: Man Overboard (MOB) Pole

GalvestonBay, The one I have is a Jim-Buoy Model 950. It doesn't have it's flag and it's pretty shop worn. They do not include mounting hardware. This one would fit the Jim-Buoy #905 mount. I don't have that in stock but I would be glad to order one for you or you could make something up. I'd take $20.00 plus shipping for the pole. If you're interested, email me at hopcarmarine@yahoo.com with your address and I can figure out how much the shipping is, probably as much as the pole!
You can check my companies website to see who we are: www.hopkins-carter.com
Here's a link to the Jim-Buoy site: Jim Buoy
