Radar Detector

Page 1

The manual is in English, it basically detects large commercial ship's radar.

It's great for anyone on a budget!

I haven't even installed it, it's literally sitting in a box in the garage, just opened two days ago. Reason I'm selling it brand new is I came upon some more treasure[cash], and decided to buy a radar. Obviously, a radar is going to set it off, on-board, so I have to sell it now..

If your just looking for Radar why not buy a used auto radar detector for 10.00 at the flee market. Most modern detectors can be adjusted for signal.

The marine unit has a 360 degrees sensor, the car ones only "looks" forward.

Re: Radar Detector

I'm curious why someone would buy such a device (radar detector) when one can buy a Rx only AIS for less?

What is the attraction?

Not positive, but pretty sure the Valentine One covers front, rear, and somewhat to each side.

Met a lot of big boat at sea having radar but no AIS (army boats, customs, fishermen...). Depends which sea you're sailing of course, but when you're single handed your boat in long distances, AIS + Radar detector allow you to sleep a little bit longer

Re: Radar Detector

Regarding car models:

You'd want to pick up a ship's radar signature miles away. Vehicle radar detectors typically activate a few hundred yards away. Also I'm pretty sure the bands are different.

Oh, I agree that having both would be better if that is fiscally reasonable.

On the other subject, I have encountered more than a few merchant vessels at sea whose radar was not turned on. Also, the non-AIS vessels are rapidly becoming rarer. I suspect that fishermen will be the ones to hold out longest... always have been a secretive lot! The military vessels usually have an active and competent watch roster when not participating in AIS protocol.

But yeah, having both would be better... but buy the AIS first!

Cheers,

Jim

I'm hopeful that at least they'll have receivers onboard, but not only are they secretive but cheap as well. They'll have a dozen fish finders and a chopper strapped to the back but god help anyone who wants to scrap the tape player in favor of something than can read MP3's off a thumb drive.
