Revere Coastal Commander *New*

I just purchased this as a gift for a great Mentor, but as it turned out, he just recently got one a few months earlier. Being that I am not a avid Sailor or Nautically inclined in anyway, I have no use for this.

Most of these sell between $1700 upwards to over $2000 online.

When I bought this from the Marina Yacht Club, they said it was brand new donated to them for a fund raiser.

I'm listing this for $1600. I have all the documentation to go along with it.

Hi Dboy319 and welcome.

Since Cruiser's Forum is international you might want to mention the country and city where you're located.

A buyer will also need to know the certification/inspection date, since the raft "loses" a significant amount of value when it needs reinspection.

Why would you say that this is a scam? Just curious, is there something that I mentioned that would make you think that?

No not at all. Not sure what brought that on. Only thing I can guess, maybe he thinks the price is on the high side. FYI you can find the same raft on the internet for about $1600. If you bought retail you probably paid a little more.

Questions from Hellosailor will be critical in determining the value as life rafts are only certified for a certain time period so if it has been sitting in a closet for a while and on the dealers floor for a while it could have lost some significant fraction of its useful life.

Re: Revere Coastal Commander *New*

I understand what you mean. Once again, I'm not familiar with all these things but I did buy it at a price that is almost not possible except that it was for Charity. Someone had donated it to the club and in turn the club sold it to benefit their boys and girls organization. The paper work shows this was manufactured in 2006, sold in 2007 so it isn't all that old. But I was told by the Yacht club that it was never used. As for determining the value of it, I just figured listing it at less than whats on the internet was fair all things considered. Thanks for your feedback though. Do you know what other options I have to selling this?

Re: Revere Coastal Commander *New*

I think selling here is as good an option as any but the age is a problem.

Not completely sure but I think these rafts have to be tested and re-certified every five years. Doesn't matter if it was still sitting on the shelf in the store, once it reaches the expiration date it has to be tested.

The bad news, I think the retesting could be $600-$900, varies somewhat with the brand and model. I suggest you check with the manufacturer or dealer to find out the time period for this model.

By the way, good on you for buying this for charity.

Re: Revere Coastal Commander *New*

I don't see anything to howl "scam" about, except the liferaft industry itself.

Rafts have to be repacked and recertified (sometimes at a cost over $1000) annually in many cases. Some rafts, from some makers, when used for recreational (not racing, not commercial) purposes, have 3 year requirements instead. At five years, this is one of the most generous, so for someone looking for a recreational in-shore raft, if they deduct the price that a current repack would cost, this could be a good thing.

The original donor may have donated it because it had been sitting around too long. Once that happens and the need for a repack "now" impacts their retail price...A charitable gift just becomes good economics for them.

And shipping the raft, probably has to be by ground or hazmat, because of the gas cylinder (& flare kit?) packed in it.

Not to mention it probably weighs 60-80 lbs or more. Try getting a FedEx Air rate for that.
