Sailomat 601 Wind Steering - Sydney, Australia

Have a Sailomat 601 self-steering wind vane for sail (errr sale) in Sydney, Australia. Bought it in Mexico for our trip home, comes with all the original documentation and installation instructions. We used it on the sail, but now are lightening the boat up for racing! The Sailomat is in good condition, made of aluminum so very good shape. Have photos, but posting the stock ones for now.

Make an offer! These sell new for thousands, but sell reasonable priced to the right buyer!

Technical Stuff: Sailomat 601 Mechanical Servo-Pendulum Self-Steering for Sailboats 23'-65' LOA.

It is still for sale to best offer... I have some additional photos of it if you would like to see them. Also can scan some key pages of the Sailomat manual or installation tips if you need to see the technical points regarding your specific installation...

Pictures would be very helpful. What size boat did you use it on? From the Sailomat website the 601 came in an S or X model, which was based on the shaft length. There were 3 blade lengths for one, and 4 for the other. Do you know what you have? Any spare parts come with it?

Thanks

Doug

Sailomat 601 photos and measurements

We had the Sailomat on a 41' C&C.

I took some photos and made some measurements for you. The Sailomat comes with a VERY universal installation bracket. It mounts with 4 bolts, and can be adjusted via the mount for most stern types including a canoe stern, sugar scoop, etc. In the installation manual, they have photos of various stern types and various mounting methods.

To answer your question on what type of Sailomat 601, the S or X, I don't know the answer to that. I haven't seen the measurements describing the models, but you might be able to tell from the measurements that I have taken.

I have updated the photo with some measurements... just did it quickly in MSPaint, but I've also outlined the number them here from top to bottom of the photo starting on the left side of the Sailomat and then working to the right side measurements.
Left Side of MSPainted Photo:
223cm - center pivot to top of air blade
173cm - height from center pivot to bottom of water blade
98cm - height from center pivot to static water level on water blade

Right Side of MSPainted Photo:
105cm - length of air blade
95cm - Stern Sheer - from water to top of stern
93cm - length of water blade

We don't have any additional spares with the Sailomat, just the unit as is with air and water blades.

Let me know if you need any further information. One note, the air blade had a crack on the top few inches... you'll notice in the photos that it has been glued and taped, the blade it still in the proper shape and works as it should... Sailomat does sell extra air blades and water blades (in additional lengths) if you need spares.

Photos:
1.) Sailomat_NoteHighOffCenterMount_IMG_5433
We mounted the Sailomat higher up and off-center to keep the swim ladder functional. It still steered the boat fine, and I'm told centered and with the water blade down a few more cm it would have had even better functionality on all tacks.

2.) Sailomat_WaterBladeUP_IMG_5418
The water blade stores up. It will also swing to the other side over 120 degrees. The Water blade has one small bolt that is designed to sheer if it strikes something, allowing the water blade to pop up

3.) Sailomat_WaterBladeDOWN_IMG_5431
Blade down in the water, note that I don't have the control lines attached.

4.) SailomatUniversalMountDetail_IMG_5419
Note the mount with good adjustability.

thanks and let me know,
Jeff

I have a Sailomat I should sell. It's in good condition. Has a little corrosion on some of the bolts. It's the shorter version. Two plywood vanes. I think there's a wheel steering ring ???

I recall machining the mounting bracket a little because my transom angle...or something. Can't remember...damn cruiseheimers!

It's in Monterey, California. I'm in Borneo. But I'll be there in August. I think I paid US$1200 for in on EBay 4 years ago. It was new, never used but a bit weathered. Works great. For my CF friends same price plus shipping.

I could use the money. Beer here in Borneo is almost 60 cents US a can. Lunch a dollar. $1200 will extend my cruise 2 years

Yup. Basically you take out the set screws and the balls fall out all over the floor and into inaccessible places...lost forever. Once you master that problem everything else is simple. Spin the inner tube and it 'unscrews' the bearings.

Don't recall any bushings. The inner races are epoxied in place, as I recall.

Don't recall the manual covering this subject.
