Re: SCS PTC-II with Pactor 3 license

These are both serial modems, and would require a USB-serial adapter to use them in the absence of a COM port. I have several used Digi Edgeport/4 adapters (4 COM ports) and I'd include one for $30 with a modem. These run $250-300 online, but some found on eBay can be substantially less. Edgeports have always been on SailMail's short list of approved hardware with SCS-friendly device drivers.

I've found that having multiple COM ports available allows you to control multiple HF radios (marine, ham, etc.) with a single modem by simply changing the radio control serial port in Airmail, as opposed to swapping physical cables (assuming the modem is capable of controlling the radio in the first place) to change radios. Of course, you still have to switch audio cables when changing radios. I have 4 HF email-ready radios on my boat, connected through a coax switch to the backstay, with a second coax switch to access alternate antennas, so this helps. I use an Edgeport/8 for this, which also gives me extra COM ports to switch various serial GPS inputs for PC chart plotters.

Re: SCS PTC-II with Pactor 3 license

Yes, I still have the Ptc-IIe. Hooking up any pactor modem to an IC-718 or M700pro is very straightforward. If you actually have the older M700, not so much--you'll have to either modify it by adding a jack on the rear, or use the microphone jack. I've done the latter, but it's not especially convenient always changing cables when switching between SSB and pactor.

Re: SCS PTC-II with Pactor 3 license

The only difference is that the PTC-II can control the radio, so everything can be done through a single serial port. The PTC-IIe lacks the radio control function, but (see the third post in this thread) that's no problem if you have a second serial port--the radio can be controlled directly by Airmail running on the PC. Even though I have a PTC-IIpro in a box in the closet, I use a -IIe on my own boat.

Re: SCS PTC-II with Pactor 3 license

Sailingships and Patti21 - Both modems have been sold. However, in the interest of helping to pay the rigger for my new standing rigging this week, I've decided to sell the one I'd been keeping as a spare for myself. It's a PTC-IIpro with pactor 3 license, which is a step above the other two. I'd sell it for $975. PM me if interested.
