Sold for only $750 but he really wanted it. I'm so glad I didn't let the kids have it for their tree fort! I had no idea they were worth so much.

Not a bad price..They retailed at around $1,500.00 before production stopped a few years ago. Plenty of used ones around for $400 to $500 but some of those can be pretty rough.

I bought a brand new one for $1,350.00 8 years ago and it will pprobably last longer than me...

I rebuilt mine, it cost me about $700 and had to order some parts from Scotland, but it is an outstanding winch...

The rebuild cost ya $700.00......?
Or was that the price ya paid used?

I bought my first one in Connecticut and took it home as carry-on luggage on Delta airlines.
Should have seen the looks of the security folks when it went through the X-ray machine..

(They axsed what is was and not wanting to say anchor-windlass as that would probably raise more eye-brows, I told them it was a "sailboat-anchor" and that explained it, and I got blessings and smiles as they cleared me through.)

At any rate, I re-built it and finding nothing really "worn" I just replaced the bushings and springs..Also discovered that the factory "exploded" diagram had an error in it: Customer service here in the US explained how it should really be and problem solved. Total cost for the parts I ordered was around $150.00, including white spray-paint.

After a few years of use, I had a muscle-man for crew and he tried to lift the anchor with the lock ON..After that episode the thing started slipping a bit so I sold it for $600.00 and explained the problem to the new owner, then bought a brand new one.

Turned out the slipping problem was from me packing too much grease inside, the next guy removed some and it worked great forever after.

So does my new one going on 8 years now.

Here is a toast to the 555 Sea-Tiger..Wish they would make-em still.

Some of the parts I could not find in the US, I found a company in Scotland that had the parts. I had to pay sterling which was almost double the dollar at the time. Also some of the parts I had refabed in a machine shop, all of the spindles were frozen and were marred when removed, in fact one we just remade. But unfortunetly yes $700 to rebuild. Between the parts from Scotland and the refabed parts... However, on the bright side I now have a basically brand new windlass that has performed flawlessly. I am very happy if not a little poorer...

Practical Sailor had a short article this month stating that a former SL employee is now selling the complete SeaTiger again. This may be the same UK fellow who's been providing the spare parts. The website is Simpson Lawrence Yacht parts and spares. No pricing info up there that I can see, although there are listings for various spare parts as well as the entire windlass.
