Small Diesel (12-18hp) - Chesapeake Bay

I need a small engine for a Tartan 27 - (if finding parts to build one from the old 5411 that I have fall through) - the trick will be finding something that fits on the original Atomic 4 rails (bed) - it is pretty narrow. There is a W27 listed in Annapolis, but I think it is too much engine for what I need.

Try Beta marine?

Beta marine sells engines as direct replacements for the Atomic 4, check it out if you don't mind buying new.

Also, Westerbeke/Universal (westerbeke.com).

The Universal M3-20B based on a Kubota, as are the Betas, and at least one mounting option sets directly on Atomic-4 engine beds. I replaced the Atomic-4 in an Irwin-32 with this.

Also, there is a Westerbeke 12 HP Diesel, don't know if it would be more suitable for a T-27.

Wink I have Yanmar GM20

Hi...I have the perfect diesel for you...with trans. It is the Yanmar GM 20 which fits perfectly into the Atomic FOur spot..it is actually 16hp continuous and 20 intermittant. I have an Ericson 35 I bought the diesel for, but then found a 25 hp Universal diesel that still fits in the slot but has more power...its perfect for your boat. I took it out of a classic sailboat that was repowered, but the hull was rotting away...the engine was running perfectly. I would take $1500 and ship it to you. I also took some pics today to list it on Ebay, and can send you them if you like. Included are the motor mounts. John 310-415-4960

Rob - I didn't see the one above this one until now - I am going to call him - as for the 5411 if I find I don't need the marinizing parts - exhaust manifold, bell housing etc, you are close and if you can use parts --- call me 610-268-8068 - I am near Kennett Square, PA just over the MD border.

! shortly will have a Yanmar 2QM15 for sale in perfect working order, I'm upgrading to a 30 Hp for my boat. The price would be a thousand dollars. Mauricio.

Found a M18

Thank you all that have given advice etc - I found a M18 Universal in pretty good shape - the M18 is a Kubota Z600 where my 5411 was a Z500 - basically the same footprint and most parts from one fit the other. The M18 comes with a Hurth HBW 50 trans (I think - there is no model or SN on that unit??) that was about an inch shorter so I have switched to my Hurth HBW 5, this way I have no surgery or shaft changes with the installation. The M18 is fresh water cooled, where the 5411 was raw water. I have to fabricate an alternator mount, as I must have the alternator reversed and ahead of the engine, not sticking out from the side as with the factory setup, to get the Tartan 27 engine cover/companionway steps to fit in place. I did that on the 5411 but that is one part that I can't switch over - with the fresh water exhaust it is different.

I'll have 2 transmissions, some 5411 parts and a few buckets of Petter parts and 2 blocks, a Petter and the 5411 that I'll list when I find some time this winter.

did you find what you need for your 5411? I found an engine and will have what is left of this 5411 - let me know. I will be keeping a few parts that fit the new (used) M18 which is based on a Kubota Z600 (very like the Z500 that is the platform for the 5411).
