Spinnaker

Looking for a used, realistically priced spinnaker for my 38' Westwind. She measures
J= 17 feet (foot)
I= 47 feet (luff)
Never realized how crazy expensive these things are. Hoping to find a very used one, i guess.

Re: Spinnaker

I have two I don't use, I'll take some measurements and post them with maybe a picture or two. My boat is 37ft and the mast head is 50ft off the water so one of these may work for you. I'll let them go for 200 usd each plus shipping if they fit your app. One or both your choice. They are old but in good shape. One has been repaired if I remember correctly. Will get back to you soon.

Re: Spinnaker

Ok, here they are. The red/white/blue is marked with the dims @ luff=43.3, foot=28.4. It has a repair that is visible in the one pic down in the stripe area. The black/yellow/blue is 27ft along the foot and I didn't measure the luff as it was getting dark but it appears to be a little smaller than the RWB chute. PM me with your info if you want one or both.

Cheers!

Re: Spinnaker

Oh, and also the RWB chute has some racing numbers on it, for what it's worth.

Ok.. I am intersted I. The dark blue/ black one. Iv never used a chute before and am unsure about how much leeway you can have as far as fit. My foot measures 17' and my luff 47' ... It is a 38 ft. Cutter. If the dark chute is smaller it will be closer to fitting. Are these symmetrical?

Re: Spinnaker

Yes, these are both symmetrical chutes. I assume you are speaking of the length of your fortriangle at 17', which doesn't play much of a roll in the length of foot of the spinnaker (no expert here but that's the way I understand it). I have only flown a chute on one occation while crewing on someone elses boat, and we didn't use a pole due to short crew and hassle factor. Dangerous, I know but we were young and foolish. My boat was a racer built in the mid '60s and has a very narrow beam compaired to most boats today so I would think either one would be slightly smallish for your 38, but on the other hand, racing boats tend to be slightly overcanvased so these sails may be just perfect. Just guessing here. The length of your pose may be somewhat telling in what size is more appropriate, perhaps someone with more experience with these things can chime in with some sage advice.
