1966 Tartan 27 YAWL. This is a wonderful Chesapeake Bay vessel, easy to handle yawl rig, comfortable cockpit for 4, full galley with propane/butane Sea Swing stoves, ice locker, etc. Great for day sailing or overnights, but she is no slug – it is a fast Sparkmen Stevens design. Comes with 3 working sails – Main, Mizzen (or Jigger) and a roller furled Genoa (jib), 2 spinnakers an assorted staysails. She as been re-powered with a Universal M18 fresh water-cooled (heat exchanger) diesel - 2011. New canvas 2011– Dodger and Sail Covers. New batteries 2011. Salty boat with lots of teak bright work. Located - Upper Chesapeake Bay location. Fully equipped down to dinnerware, tools, radios and misc. lines, hooks etc. $7500. Kept at a club on a mooring – club memberships might be possible, if so they are around $500, membership, mooring, haul/launch and yard storage

Fine looking vessel. Wish I was up there on the Chesapeake to take a look. Is this a centerboard boat?

Re: Tartan 27 Yawl

The yard I worked in, looked after one these in the middle 60s. Belonged to a knighted English gentleman, whose grandsons sailed it a few weeks a year.
I so looked forward to launching and prepping, and sailing it the 10 miles to its summer mooring.
A beautiful little boat, with a grown up heart.
New owner will be very fortunate person.

Re: Tartan 27 Yawl

You've kept the boat in very good condition. Just out of curiosity, what is the difference in the rig between the sloop and yawl rig. Is the mast in the same location as the sloop, the main cut down, and/or the main mast shorter???

Re: Tartan 27 Yawl

SkiprJohn yes she is a centerboarder or a keel centerboard I should say – she sails well with the board up. I used it mostly for racing to gain that little edge. The centerboard is stuck at present, swelled. It is a composite construction, a mild steel frame with coring and glass skin – when water gets in the steel rusts and causes swelling. I opened it up removed rust and re-skinned it about 8 years ago – that will need to be done again. Peter O. asked about the sail arrangement on the yawl – I think the main mast is the same as the sloop, but the main boom is 11’ if I am not mistaken. The yawl was obviously an after thought at Tartan – but for such a little bit of cloth, a handkerchief, it balances the boat nicely – there have been days I sailed the jib and jigger and run at hull speed with no heel (my wife’s orders). As for condition she is a 1966 boat hull 228 and the pictures flatter her – she isn’t perfect but she is priced right I believe, and it is time for someone else to have her. I am less tolerant of the new folks running our club and I, myself, see that I am not 25 anymore – sinking the dink tells me to think about hanging it up. There is all the info on the yawl on the Tartan owners website. Blue Stocking - yes this boat has been a thrill to sail.
