Yeah, the 'ketch' sure looks like a schooner. Interesting deals.

We got this boat at one of those monthly auto auctions, and there was exactly one other person bidding against us past $30k. Man, that still gets me. Still, we got it for a friggin' song, considering its condition.

Those are three opportunities for someone to change their lives. I'm hoping they get taken advantage of, and quickly

The Ketch rig has one mainsail it seems, both mast have furling foresails on them. Very unusual rig in my opinion. Is this normal, or not so uncommon? I always thought the second mast just had a mainsail, while the foremast had the regular combination of sails, 2 jibs and a main?

Well, the cheapest similar boat on Yachtworld is going for $79,000 and there are several in that range. If you could get this one for anything less than that, you'd be way ahead of the game.

What's with the Dunkin Donuts box on the cockpit seat of the IP?

I've seen IP 32's go for about 50K in VGC. Considering you are buying as is where is with no right to advance inspection -- let alone survey -- my estimate of a bargain would be far far (far) lower.

Export?

Just curious if any one knows of this caveat

"Removal of export only items must be completed no later than Wednesday, February 9, 2011 "

Does any one have experience with purchasing from these types of auctions?

I've been to several of these auctions and have bought many items but no boats. If I were interested, I'd just go there and try to work my way in to have a look. If you call ahead, they may help you get a look even though the website states it's not possible.
The export clause deals with those items that must be exported out of the country. Those are typically items that did not have clearance to come into the country.

Dare I ask how many bidders show up for these things usually?

We got ours about ten years ago in Seattle. I think it was a messy divorce situation, and the boat had been sitting for awhile in a state of mid-repair. Most everything was here already to put it back together, with the only significant additions being the generator, sails, electronics and updated safety gear to qualify for a race.

Have talked with many other supremely pleased auction buyers and they all say the same. Great boats, usually ready to roll with some elbow grease and re-assembly. We got lucky on ours in that we had an employee who knew steel hulls, and he came to give it the tap-tap-tap around the thru-hulls. No haul-out/survey was allowed.

Still, I do feel bad for the guy who lost it at auction. This thing is an absolute dream.

auction

There are sometimes hundreds that show up to the auction. Of course they are there for the many other items. Look at the inventory of items and you'll get an idea of how many will show. As far as the boat, it always comes down to two or three knowledgeable bidders who want the boat. All are there to get a deal so nobody gets crazy with these big ticket items. The speculators (me) shy away early because the profit margin often disappears, especially after you factor in "worst case scenario", i.e., seized engine, missing sails, gutted interior, etc. etc. That is why you must get a look at the boat. Otherwise, bid very low and hope for the best. Just don't get caught up in the emotion of the bidding. Remember, there is a 10% buyers fee.
I bought my 44' cutter at another auction but I had done extensive homework before bidding. I researched and found the old owner who gave me tons of info that helped a lot.
Good luck to whoever gets her!! She looks great.
