Volvo MD30A Diesel, MS2 Transmission

We have recently repowered and have a Volvo MD30A inboard diesel with MS2B transmission available in Seattle. The engine has given us 7100 + trouble-free hours, since we have preventively replaced or rebuilt all peripherals. For example, new Orca Marine (Bellingham) heat exchanger, oil cooler, driveplate, fuel transfer pump, Leece Nivelle 105 amp alternator. Oil changes made every 100 hours. All maintenance records for last 20 years available. The engine runs perfectly but parts are getting difficult to locate. Spares are also available. $2500.

Yes, the engine is for sale, as well as the transmission. Can we answer any questions? Sorry for the late reply. We have been traveling.

Hi--we do have photos, but you will probably need to organize the transport, if interested. I suspect customs will be your biggest issue. If you get the shipping figured out, let us know. We can be flexible on price. Thx.

Re: Volvo MD30A Diesel, MS2 Transmission

I take it your MD2030 is still for sale.

MY interest in it is somewhat sickening because I have one with less than 20hrs on the clock. MIne is probably better suite to the boat than yours was power wise. My boat is 24'4" on the waterline, a 33'3" John Alden timber cutter built in Australia and launched in 1963

Sickening? I bought my engine new in 199* and am still completing the major refit that I started around then. At nearly 69, I'm running out of time for sailing so I aim to relaunch early in the New Year. And you've had 7000 hrs service out of yours, in the meantime.

Reason for my interest is that I plan to keep my engine going for the foreseeable future and recognise that I'm going to have to be creative to do so as spares get harder to find. The engine pushes my boat along very well and I can see no reason to replace for at least five years or more if I can draw on a source replacements for the peripherals.

Most interest to me right now is the 108amp alternator you mention. I'm looking at upping the electrical output of my engine with a High output alternator. I know nothing about the one you have. Does it replace the standard one or is it driven off the power take-off (PTO)? I can find out nothing about the HP available at the PTO so it would be good to know if you have any info on that.

Shipping an engine of this size to Australia is not much of a problem these days when you have access to a consolidation agent in the US, like I do.

I'll need to know a little more about it before we talk price but if it saves me some expense on the alternator upgrade, that would be a good start.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Volvo MD30A Diesel, MS2 Transmission

Good morning, Australia! Yes, the engine is for sale but I am afraid you may think it is a different one. It is a 4 cylinder, 62 hp, MD 30A, not an MD2030 and it may be too large for your lovely vessel. Without the transmission, it weighs about 325 kg. Because the engine had two belts, we were able to mount the 105 amp Leece Nivelle alternator in place of the stock 55 amp with minor modifications. The main concern with a larger alternator is to make sure it is FIRMLY mounted so that it doesn't shake itself to an early demise. If you still think you may be interested, let us know and we can give you more dimensions. Again, my concern is that it will be too large for your available space or requirements.

Cheers, Camano

Re: Volvo MD30A Diesel, MS2 Transmission

Thanks Camano,

You are correct. My misunderstanding is due to people referring to my engine as an MD2030A. The figures refer to the rated horse power range and I thought the 20 might have been dropped in the US market! With 62HP you must have been quite content with the MD30A in your boat.

Figuring out how to cover modern day electrical expectations in a boat the size of mine is interesting to the point of frustration.

Fair winds,

Cutterman
