westerbeke 38hp engine

i am selling a westerbeke 38hp engine. It is new, with only 1 hour on it. But here is the situation. The engine was started, ran, then sat for over 4 years. Next time they started it, it seized. i have not validated that it is seized, but i am going to sell it anyway, as i am going a different direction. i am certain it can be recovered as an engine, or parted out for profit as everything is 'old stock, never used'.

engine currently in Tacoma WA. i will be getting it out of the engine bay as i need to clean, paint and put in the new engine. At that point i am bringing the westerbeke down to Olympia for storage until sold.

Worth in the neighborhood of $9,000, good diesel. i am finishing out a 42 foot trimaran and am open to offers for trades.

Will have pictures in a while posted on craigslist, seattle.

Bummer, perhaps when you get it out, you could ask a mechanic to try to get it running for a few hours labor. Will be worth way more if you can post a video of it running in a shop.

Re: westerbeke 38hp engine

I found with my Westerbeke W46, that had sat for a few years seemed seized. Turned out it was a swelling of carbon in the cylinder at the head that prevented the engine from rotating 360 degrees. Perhaps try putting a socket on the crank nut and rotating it backward to confirm. All you may need to do is remove the head and decarbonize it.

There are plenty of engines that get sold as new that have sat that long. It all comes down to storage in the interim.
