I delivered a Westsail 28 from MD to NY back in 80. Going down the Delaware Bay it was pretty choppy. I never before or since experienced such hobby horsing on a boat. We were motors sailing into the chop. A beautiful blue sloop was nearly keeping up with us under sail alone. Next morning she came into the marina. It was Whisper owned by Hall Roth. He asked how I liked sailing the Westsail. I responded I didn't. He said he though it was the second worst design of a boat ever. Try one going to weather in big seas before you buy. They sure do look salty though.

I had a Westsail 32, and I liked it a great deal. I wouldn't mind having a Westsail 28 here in Arizona to sail.

I think the problem with the 28 is the long overhangs on a short boat. The owner also had two anchors and chain clear up front of the sprit and over the water. Later I moved the chain into the bilge for the ocean leg but we didn't experience rough seas after the bay so I couldn't see what effect it had. The 28 and 32 are different birds. I never asked Mr. Roth what the worst designed boat was. As he left the dock he let his dock line fall into the water and of course it wrapped around his prop. He stripped to his skivvies in front of the watching crowd and dove in to unwind it. Never the less he had quit a yachting history and wrote enjoyable books.
