Re: Yacht Wanted . . . Australia

James, I just spent 4 weeks in malaysia and phuket looking at second hand single hull sloops set up for cruising.
a valiant 40', great at 115Kusd
KP 44' at 110K usd, beautiful
roberts spray, steel, 36' for 15K usd, oldie but a goodie!!!
Many others.
34' nordica for 30K usd, solid
Finally bought an alloy 39' boat, 1990, made in hamburg germany and faultless, everything was , nearly, just what I wanted, but , oh! so expensive!!!
There is some real gems amongst the tired old fibreglass cruiser in asia!
Good luck from Keith.

Keith,
Got an email back from Noel. He has re-fallen in love with his Formosa so hanging on to it. But a good guy with offers of help when I'm ready.
Thanks again.
Vic

Re: Yacht Wanted . . . Australia

The valiant 40' in boat lagoon has a huge inventory, absolutely everything set up perfectly by the live aboard cruisers from usa, home for past umpteen years, the best valaint 40' I have seen! Will take a lot less than 115K usd.

Re: Yacht Wanted . . . Australia

That's great, I like the valiant 40, I had a look at the one in OZ and thought it was very very well used.

The one in Malaysia sounds good.

My wife was a little concerned there may not be enough room for 2 adults and 2 kids (7 & 10). Any thoughts?

I don't think there is a rule of thumb on that. If you are not getting on well no boat is big enough and I've heard of larger families doing quite well on far smaller boats. It's something that needs to work itself out. Concern is something to consider but if you don't have some experience of your own and confidence it's hard to draw from others.

Valiant 40 would be IMHO one of the last great American boats left in production.

Consider a better source: The Admiral knows when a boat is too small when she sees it. I'm afraid you are on your own. You need to pack up the family and see if it works. It could and it should but will it? It's managing expectations and setting up for success. It helps to stack the deck. I would say chat up the positives and go see it. Buying a boat long distance has its costs but you need to work the family into the deal 100%. I know that works.

Thanks Paul, I have been stacking the deck for years, if I stack it any higher it may tumble over!!!

Re: Yacht Wanted . . . Australia

The kelly peterson, called harmonica, at 44' would suit you better, with a huge aft cabin and centre cockpit that works well, lots of new gear, a dazzler! at 110K usd in yacht haven phuket, 3 weeks ago?
cheers.

Re: Yacht Wanted . . . Australia

Thanks Spokes.

I am actually on my way to Brisbane tonight to look at a boat, if that doesn't work, I will give you a call.

I actually know the boat, sailed on her in a few twighlights I think with the original owner if I'm not mistaken.
