Airline Pilot / Sailor Available to Crew Worldwide

Available worldwide between June and Aug. Willing to pay my own expenses. I have blue water experience crewing and as skipper. I am comfortable with maintaining engines, electronics and navigation. Depending on length of the voyage my wife could be available as well. She does very well at sea and would join in the watch rotation and help in the galley. I look forward to hearing what opportunities may await. Email: hkappes at hotmail dot com

Re: Airline Pilot / Sailor Available to Crew Worldwide

Looking for an experienced crew as my wife is unable to make the leg due to family illness in the USA. We normally sail two up as the boat is rigged for single-handed sailing. If your wife wanted to join us, that would be fine, but she could take it easy most of the time.

I am going from Darwin to Richards Bay South Africa, leaving Darwin in June. We will go to Ashmore Reef, Christmas Island, Cocos Keeling, Rodigues, Mauritius, Reunion and then to Richards Bay. Each of the first hops should be 4 days or so. Then the hop from Cocos Keeling to Rodigues should be 11 days or so. That would put us in Rodigues in July and then we would cruise Mauritius until late October.

The boat is a First 47.7 (a 48 foot sloop) and we have sailed it from France to Australia. The boat has everything expected and more. I am a former Army helicopter pilot (18 mo in Vietnam), USCG Captain and 40 years racing and sailing experience.

The trip would be interesting as it includes visiting the "top end" of Australia, deserted islands (Ashmore Reef) and vacation spots. The leg from Cocos Keeling should be very fast as the trades provide 18 knots average wind on the beam all the way to Rodigues. We should average 200 mile days.

The trip sounds very interesting. Unfortunately it is looking like I may have a 6 month work assignment starting in May.
