Would expect that "crew" are covered under international law and the owner/master of the vessel is responsible for repatriating them--which would also mean putting up their return airfare or bonding that. While "guests" would be responsible for themselves.

No doubt each venue and each different flag will treat the responsiblities somewhat differently.

I was hoping that hellosailor would respond.
I understand that the preferred designation would be “guest”; but the manifest forms often specify “Master”, “Crew”, or “Passenger”.
The prudent choice between Crew & Passenger is less clear to me.

Look at it from the viewpoint of the potential crew--you are going to get offshore experience on a well-found boat, which will tell you whether you really want to go cruising, without the expense of buying your own boat, or paying some school to take you, plus all of the airfaire. There are a lot of qualified sailors out there, and posting on the internet is one way to find them.

This thread seems to have gotten a little lost, but I am one of a couple who would be interested in crewing from Norfolk, but we'd have to get off in the Bahamas. We've left our boat down there and wouldn't have the repatriation problem.

Post us a comment at Casting Off if you have any interest.
