I started south from Neah Bay in October one year. Weather report said gale force to 20 miles, then fine NW winds. My schooner could take a few miles of gale. Wound up in one of the biggest storms to hit the 'Graveyard' in 20 yrs. Disabled several vessels, and my schooner brought us thru it [no thanks to my lack of skill]. This is an insane time of year to try this. That ocean is awesomely huge and totally relentless. Waves far higher than my masthead. We submarined many times [you can tell because suddenly the interior of the boat is quiet enough to talk - which nobody can -]. With ten thousand miles of ocean sailing under my belt and even with a Colvin boat I would not do this.
