The Japanese crap is a hazard. But I do not know when it will get better. Most of our sail will be daylight but we are overnight passaging. I think we will slow way down during the night.
I wouldn't slow down for japanese flotsam. The garbage is very spread out (most hasn't started to get close to us either), and the weather windows are short. Safer to keep your speed up and get 'er done.

I agree, weather windows appear to be lasting for 5 days max. If you need to run for a safe harbor, give yourself enough time ti get acrossed the sandbars.
BTW Newt, I lived in Layton, Utah from 1945 until mid 1949 before moving to Clearfield.

sail safe and keep us posted

Hey Newt... safe passage, my friend... don't be tempted to turn left too soon either at Flattery or the entrance buoy at the Bar... enjoy the Pacific swell and the exhilarating feeling of surfing down a quartering sea with a bone in your teeth. I do miss those days!!! Cheers, Capt Phil

The forecast says the waves are supposed to be decreasing until Tues. And there is a high hanging around a ways off shore as well. So you may have a good run but it might be wet.

What is it with these southerner's? Every time I go out past Neah Bay the wind eventually turns south. It is almost like the campfire smoke- follows me around!

The Pacific High has moved to the West allowing storms to travel up the coast from the south.
When this condition changes, the storms will swing around to come from the Northwest.
Later in the year the Pacific High will move to the North and push the jet stream to higher latitudes bringing calmer conditions.

Re: Ocean Work Next Week - PNW the Real Thing

Yes but not untill last of July and August and maybe the first of Sept also the water temp will rise some and no wind and motoring is the quickest way to get up or down the coast. It's like hurricane seaon on the east coast only in reverse we get rough weather most of the time and a couple of short months of calm seas. Good luck on getting a 2 day weather window and go then but odds are not on a weekend. There is another weather window in January and Feduary .

Newt,
Think of the Southerly outside as being the reverse of the "Convergent Zone" so common in Puget Sound.

Re: Ocean Work Next Week - PNW the Real Thing

Things are looking better each time I see a revised forecast. I least I have some wind, which is better than most of the summer in the San Juans. Senor, you might want to duck in at the Columbia for a day or two till the NW winds return.

Re: Ocean Work Next Week - PNW the Real Thing

It seems to be calming down out there. The forecast and buoy info look positive fore the next 2-3 days with just under 10 kt of wind and a low moving in up north late Monday.
