Re: Washington state to California, Mexico, South Pacific

So far I've spent six years living aboard and cruising a twenty seven foot Santana. I've also sailed on another mid sized vessel and a sixty foot yacht during scouts. I'm nineteen years old and I live in Washington. I would be prepared for the trip by August and am looking to go either to California or even all the way. I don't talk much and I don't own a lot of things but I'm ready to go if you are

Capt Phil,
Thanks for your reply. I will keep you in mind in case I run out of other candidates, but seriously doubt we would get along very well.
best wishes,
Steve

Re: Washington state to California, Mexico, South Pacific

Patbfiller,
Thank you for your reply. To be honest, I am hesitant to take on crew younger than mid to late 20s for reasons of liability. We would have to meet and get along quite well to consider it. If you are close enough to come for a visit, you are welcome to do so. No final decisions have been made yet, but I'm already am talking with others who have experience closer to what I am looking for.
best wishes
Steve

Re: Washington state to California, Mexico, South Pacific

So far, crew search results include, several people with "no experience, but learn fast", a bunch who have 20+ years racing small boats on rivers and lakes and are now ready for "offshore experience", one 51 year old woman who just had hip surgery and thinks sailing to Mexico would be a good way to spend her recovery time, a "blue eyed blond" with lots of sailing including US to New Zealand 30 years ago with her ex-husband and her specialty is "provisioning and entertaining", a 35 year old woman who has been "boat hopping" all over the world and has a FB page full of photos of her and friends in various poses leaning against things and laying in hammocks with cocktails in hand, three guys whose experience sounded legitimate and extensive but never heard back from them after asking what kind of person they are, another bunch with little or no experience and want to know how much I will pay them to put my boat at risk, the obligatory few who think they must send an insult even when they have no interest in the offer, and one 30 year old guy who only has one year sailing, but did introduce himself, came to visit the boat and turned out to be an intelligent, nice person willing to help get the boat ready even if he does not get to go.

Guess I'll try training a crew!
Still looking for one person with legitimate offshore experience and sense enough to get to know who they are sailing with, but pik'ns are slim in that department.

P.S. if you are one of the people with legitimate experience and did not get my last message, please reply again. There are two of you I would like to talk with further if you are still interested.

Good Luck, Vino... From one of your 'insulting' replies! Seriously, I do wish you well in your search for crew... You certainly seem to be a thorough and careful skipper who knows what he wants and doesn't want. Cheers, Phil

Thanks, Phil. I appreciate that.

Re: Washington state to California, Mexico, South Pacific

Hey, Vino... Good luck in your search (again)... Back in'83 I took a CT 41 from San Diego to Vancouver, Canada and got caught off Pt Conception in the hurricane that walked up the coast from Baja. It was the one that took out the Blue Moon Saloon off the end of the pier in Monterey. You have a fine, sea worthy vessel there that can handle a blow. Made one mistake by tying down the wheel and going below and the cable on the steering quadrant snapped. Re-ran the cable replaced it with a piece of clothesline that got us as far as Monterey. Sloppy steering but it worked! CT's are tough boats and behave well in hugh seas. Have a great passage. Cheers, Phil

Re: Washington state to California, Mexico, South Pacific

Phil, you're the second person I met who rode out a hurricane in one of these boats.
Were you hove to, under sail, or lying a-hull? What would you do different?
