Re: Lagoon 420 or 440 ?

I read it as this--------
" Biscayne Boulevard bridge, we hoisted the big, high roach mainsail and rolled out the genoa. With the engines off, we trimmed to a broad reach and set off down the bay in the steady 10 to 12 knots of easterly breeze.

The 420, like most modern cruising cats does not impart a sense of speed as it gathers way. Since it stays level and because you are sailing from the raised helm and cockpit, you don’t hear or see the rush of water along the hull. But, the speedo and GPS tell the story. Broad reaching in a moderate breeze the 420 will sail at 7-plus knots without breaking a sweat."
He doesn't say it was 7knots in the same breeze only that it will do 7 broad reaching.......

Good investigative skills. So the writer could be intentionally misleading the readers to believe the 420 is much better than it really is.

My comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

Impi,

I can't help but ask, having owned both a Catana and a Lagoon, do you notice much of a performance difference between the two?

A typical journalistic write up, everything is flowery, bluebirds flying overhead.
Alsy palsy stuff, BUT that doesn't reflect on the boat just the magazine......

Re: Lagoon 420 or 440 ?

Seems to me some journo gave the 420 a bad rap somewhere along the line and its just gone on and on. A bit like this thread...

We wouldn't swap our 420. We don't like it... We love it!

Re: Lagoon 420 or 440 ?

I can't figure out what the problem with the 420 is.

I am doing 6.5 kts with main and gennaker up in 10.7kts apparent @ 090 deg. Our bottom needs anti-fouling and we have fixed blade props.

Don't know what other cats will do in these conditions but that doesn't seem too bad for light winds?

I agree, Bob. Nothing slow about the 420. I was just in the BVI talking with two guys sailing together on a 440 and 420. They said they are "neck and neck" in most conditions.

Re: Lagoon 420 or 440 ?

Thanks to all for your responses. Since we are about to make an offer on a 420 that pretty sums up our feelings. Surprised though that there were no comments on the 410 which we have also had our eye on (owners version). While more $$$ upfront, the 420 seems like more bang for your buck from both the short and long term perspective??

No offense to any 410 owners but a 410 does not compare to a 420 unless you want slightly better sailing performance.

I agree that the 420 is "more bang for your buck" than a 410 in all areas.

Sorry Mike ... read this one a bit late ...

I must say that I cannot say the catana had preferable performance to the Lagoon 440 or not ... they both feel different but seem to have similar speed through the water. The Lagoon is obviously equipped for long term cruising so we have loaded it to the hilt ... and still she performs incredibly well. Many fellow sailors have visited us on Impi and initially are surprised at the boat and the amount of space as were we when we initially boarded the 440. The 'lounge area' is huge for a 44 ft and the owners version cabin is more room than we need ... but I do wish I had room for a lazy boy

I would sum that up as being pretty accurate ... these boats are not designed for racing ... they are cruisers but I like that they cruise at good speeds.

Re: Lagoon 420 or 440 ?

I own a 421 that is currently under charter management in Oz. I recently purchased a secondhand Asymmetrical Spinnaker from e-Bay for. $1000 AUD the best money I have spent on the boat so far, off the wind it is just awesome to sail now. I believe the 420/421 have all been tarred with the same brush re the hybrid drive issues and people can not see past that. My advice is sail one and then make up your mind. A Race boat it is not but a comfortable spacious cruiser 42 foot long it is.

Lagoon 421 R&R with slowmo - YouTube

Link to some video of the boat not very professionally done but gives you a good idea of a 421 off the wind in 10-15 knots under Asymmetrical Spinnaker only.

Life is to short to drink bad wine.

Paul, you assy spin looks great! I've gotta get one for my 440 to. I'll be searching for a good second hand one when I get to the Caribbean....

You have your 420 in charter with Whitsunday Escape - we chartered a Bavaria 42 with them in May last year......
