Lagoon 440 carries its own float plane

Hi fellow Lagoon forum members,

After dreaming about it for ages, we now have our Airborne XT-582 trike aircraft on floats across the stern of our Lagoon "Finally My Darling". The wing is rolled up in a sturdy custom built valise that easily fits alongside the starboard walkway at the base of the guard rail stanchions. We in- corporated a lifting system with the recently installed solar panel frame, after relocating the dinghy to the port bow. We use a spinnaker-pole type rig to lift the dinghy which is simple and works really well. While I have flown trikes on wheels, they are quite different to fly on floats and after being let down by a pre-arranged instructor out of Europe (we are currently in Croatia headed for Greece), I'm now searching for a suitably qualified instructor who can come to provide training. The trike across the stern has raised lots of interest by passer-by's at marina's and I'm fairly confident this is a first for Lagoon, and probaly for anything else smaller than asuper-yacht. It looks interesting. I hope the trike doesn't move too much with rough weather. IMO, if flying off your boat is your thing, a powered paraglider is more convenient.

What a fantastic thing to have with you when cruising. Would you use this type of arrangement for long passage making?

Fantastic stuff.

We'll keep a look out for a microlight on floats in Greece this year.

Good to see you back on CF Col.

The cover looks good but guess you will need plenty of lanoline to counteract the salt spray.

Looking at Google earth there will be plenty to keep you occupied. Could easily spend a year in Turkey.

What is the situation of airspace , do you have a limit. Is it similar to Australia.

Can't wait to see some pics flying and video from your GoPro.

Cheers,

John

Totally different flight characteristics from wheels to floats. Years ago used to fly Cessna 172 on wheels at 131 knots, 90 knots max on Edo floats. reduced pitch prop for floats, necessary to unload engine, to get cruise RPM to overcome drags. Almost impossible to power stall due to weight of floats. Night landings exciting due to transparency misleading use of light spotting.
