steering chain

Does anyone know where to purchase a new steering chain for a Lagoon 410s2 please? And how long please?

On recent Atlantic crossing there was a leak at the base of the stairs on the sugar scoops due to large following waves bashing...any easy fixes please? The screws clearly need to be replaced by bolts...anything else? Thinking of using 4200.

Re: steering chain

Mcmaster-Carr is my go-to for such items. Lagoon didn't design a propriatory chain. Determine what it is and order a stock. Much cheaper, and if you want it, higher quality, that a "part."

Re: steering chain

If you've got a wobble due to your rudder getting bashed by following seas, it is time for structural reinforcement. You do not want to live with a partial repair or patch in a system as important to you as steering.

Re: steering chain

thanks for the message about the rudders.
Actually I had the rudder bearings replaced after the first Atlantic crossing due to bashing by 6-8m waves. The rudders are okay. But the steering chain is rusty and that's what I'd like to replace now...not waiting for a breakdown at some difficult place. I have the chain measurements (looks like a motorcycle chain) but don't know where to order one.

Re: steering chain

Did you catch the #2 post above? It's a standard chain of some size, SAE or metric. Get to know Mcmaster-Carr and Grainger, it's competitor. M-C's online catalog is particularly easy to use, because it steps you through from the general idea to the specific item you want.

Look carefully at the sides of your chain link. You may find a little number stamped on, such as "45". That's SAE size 45 drive chain.
