12vdc 55amp generator

My boat (Tayana 37) has the original electrical systems on board. There’s no shore charger, just the engine driven 12v 55amp generator. I just was wondering what advantage I would gain by changing to an alternator vs the dc generator. How much other conversion mods are involved. I’m inclined to just keep my current systems, but I’m listening.

A 55A generator is going to be big and heavy. The regulator is going to be external and not have the reliability of an alternator. Additionally if you like to maximize battery life a programmable external regulator like the Balmar 614 is a must. I’m not aware of any programmable regulators for generators. Alternators also produce more power at lower rpm.

Are you sure you have a generator instead of an alternator?
I am unfamiliar with Asian sailboats but US equipment changed to alternators in the late 60.
