I've asked...
time will tell..
I just help him install the diesel and the 2 alternators using 2 v-belts on each..
I know he has a 2hp DC water maker..talked with him extensively about it..
he's why I making my own water maker instead of buying one...
i'll post when I know..

I was thinking about making my own but I see a watermaker based on a Karcher pump that seems to have good results and is as cheap as putting your own package together when you factor in the freight sourcing bits and pieces from all over.

and you can duct cool air over the diodes if you wish, all for $69.

You'd be lucky to get more than 60 amps out of it after it warms up.
Car alternators will only put out their rated power for maybe 10 minutes.
I've been told by a supplier of a souped up 220 amp Delco clone that it would not put out 100 amps for more than 20 minutes and burn up if I tried to recharge my battery bank.

way Off topic..
of a small frame alternator..but fyi.. I'm planning on building a water maker using a karcher High pressure pump.. paid $40 for the setup and $40 to make it work right..1.6GPM..or I hope about 30GPH...output...15-20 would outstanding..too.. yes run on 120v from a generator..not 12V

Is thread drift less objectionable if it is from the OP?

its not that I object to thread drift.. I've been known to cause them myself..but in this case I'm wondering the why? why a brushless? high AMP isn't the issue..

Brushless because that's what I found when looking for a high amp alternator at a good price. 107 amps hot at 3000 rpm for 320 CAD.

ok..but using a v-belt or serpentine belt?

vbelt - too much load..you'll be burning up belts.
serpentine - only 107 amps?? too low..it should be easy to get 150 amps hot...
and under 300 CAD..

what the foot print? something like a 10si/12si(delco)?

ah.. the harder part..diesel or gas engine? diesel should be easy.. gas you have to be more careful on vapors..

ps I'm still trying find out the make/model that a friend used in his setup.. 180amp per alternator.. I think they were a small frame type...

Re: 200 amp Small Frame Brushless Alternator - Look OK?

Serpentine belt. I found a local machine shop to machine serpentine gears for less than 1/2 the price of the kit.

Westerbeke W46 diesel.

It is marine certified unless they run the wires out.

Small frame but I don't have the dimensions yet. Anything up to about 6.5 inches in diameter is an easy fit.

I haven't come across any cheap small frame that will guarantee for recharging at 150 amps for more than a few minutes. 107 amps at 3000 rpm is comparable to the Balmar at 1000 CAD. I'm sure I'll see 150 amps continuous at higher rpm.

Still open to alternatives.

I know a guy that uses a pair of 200amp, using 2 vbelts on each alternator,,
to charge his batteries and run his 12V water maker. the water maker uses a 2hp, 12Vdc motor..or about 360-380amps...
its possible..
no he doesn't have an extra cooling setup to keep the alternators cool..

ps I'd love to convert my single vbelt to a serpentine...and keep the alternator output the same...just to keep the belts from failing..I only have 90amp alt...
You misunderstood. I was not saying small frame alts aren't good.

I was just saying they are less **predictable**, in response to a very specific complaint.

The fact that their "highest continuous amps output" can't be predicted, varies wildly due to the overtemp conditions that sellers cannot predict.

If you can't fit a large frame unit, you need to understand that and take it into account, a so-called 200A rated unit may produce closer to that just fine in winter, but only 80A continuous when ambient gets very hot.

It seems no one is familiar with that alt.

Give it a go and let us know.

Re: 200 amp Small Frame Brushless Alternator - Look OK?

Anyone have an opinion on wiring the external regulator?

Should I leave the internal one in place as a backup or have the wires run out ready to connect?

Re: 200 amp Small Frame Brushless Alternator - Look OK?

I'd be very interested in your experience and some results at continuous load under measured conditions for Alt temp, Battery Temp, continuous bulk output, to what size and type of batteries, when they have been drawn down for a full charge.

I guess I would be very happy with an external regulator with no provision for an internal one.

Re: 200 amp Small Frame Brushless Alternator - Look OK?

I got great service from mark grasser. Www.markgrasser.com. he supplied me with a small frame 160A alternator,. I regularly charge my lithium lifepo4 400Ah battery bank at 120 Amps with no heating issues. He supplies the alternator with an external diode array which helps with the heat dissipation. He also manufactured a serpentine pulley system for my Volvo D2-55. This was not an off the shelf item and I had to supply the measurements from my engine. Excellent service, great product,.... I have no association with Mark. Just a satisfied customer. Check his prices before you commit. I don't think you really need to be concerned about the brushless aspect, just the continuous current rating versus cost and quality.
