Re: 2021/2022 Updates on 48v for main system bus

We're doing a single 12v house battery. I worry about a DC/DC failure and the complete blackout that would follow, and this single battery will at least allow VHF and other 12v items to run for a while until I can get a fix in place. Simple and inexpensive option that your winch will also appreciate.

Jodi since you don’t Want another battery up front, and you’re upgrading your system overall, and this boat sounds like a long term hold, it would be worth the effort to change out your windlass motor for a 48v motor. Will take some research but you should be able to find a compatible one within the eBike, golf cart, etc. industry. Check MadeInChina or Alibaba for sources. Do it right the first time.

How about a 230 / 110v winch?

Re: 2021/2022 Updates on 48v for main system bus

We jumped up to a 48v windlass and it's been great. Pulls such low amperage but still lots of torque.

I've completely isolated my 12V house system at this point -- have 3 orion-tr 48/12-30 units in parallel driving all of the 12V house load, and after a while I threw a tiny cheap 5Ah AGM battery on it just to be a buffer since the Orions have a tiny delay on ramp up of big loads like macerator toilets flushing and lights dimmed a tiny bit.

One thing to keep in mind with the 48V systems is that while your big draws will definitely be from the inverter, your day-to-day watt-hour usage is _likely_ coming primarily from 12V systems. Fridges, lights, water pumps, toilets, electronics, n2k, etc. So that's the system you'll need to "fill in" the most.

I am at a lose because I don't want a dedicated battery bank for winches.

Parley Revival recently installed 48v Selden electric winches on their catamaran, the cable sizes compared to the 24v/12v are significantly smaller. https://youtu.be/07R-QyMr-zE?t=266

I installed a 48v solar system at my house on land and have been living off-grid for several years now.

My catamaran is 24v, I am considering going 48v for the main battery bank and inverters, keep the existing 24v winches but power them by an intermediate smaller 24v battery that is then topped up from the 48v battery, I figure using a buck converter without a 24v battery maybe unreliable.
