The problem with Ah is that things are no longer 'implicit'. When 99% of boat systems were flooded lead-acid it was implicit that people were speaking of 12V (nominal) systems at a 20-hour rate.

In our current anchorage there are boats with 12V, 24, and 48V systems, and with at least four different battery chemistries.

Neither Ah nor Wh are really complete measurements without additional information (battery chemistry, withdrawal capabilities, voltage) and so not really useful for a truly technical discussion. Regardless, as an electrician I prefer Wh for general discussions as you can then avoid voltage questions.

Oh yeah, J is a derived SI unit same as W, so no more 'universal'. If you want universal then you need to use Amp-seconds (as that is base units) => Coulomb.

I’m out...you want the puck?...all yours...go score a bunch of goals! Crowds too smart for me...and probably too wealthy.

i’ll go enjoy one last beer in the cockpit. Check the weather for the southern exumas for tomorrow to see if it looks like we will be snorkeling in the morning and call it a night.

Sweet dreams

Unless you’re cruising a canoe, you probably have a more expensive boat than I do.

Yes, W and Wh much better for discussing power delivery and energy storage, particularly at scale. My setup has 12VDC, 24VDC, 52VDC, 80VDC (PV), 120VAC, and 240VAC... not to mention 5VDC and I believe even 20VDC with USB-PD now.

I am curious how your leaf and volt battery set ups are working for you now. Are you still satisfied with them?

Re: $2500 2000 amp hour lithium battery pack

LiFePO4 are arguably safer than lead acid, and other Li chemistries are generally quite a bit less so. There is a reason many airlines won't accept bulk Li ion shipments, and why Tesla incorporates a battery bank cooling system into their cars. While I personally have zero concerns about my LFP bank, I wouldn't let a home brew Li ion bank get within 20' get off my boat if I could avoid it, much less bring one on board.
