AC Voltage Converter for AC

I want to run a 220V aircon unit on my boat. My power sources are 220v/50hz from the genset and 110v/60hz shore power. I have found several ac units that can handle both frequencies. However, I have to deal with voltage also. Is it possible to install a voltage converter just for the aircon unit to step up the shore power voltage going into it? Another consideration is that this setup must be light. I don't want to add another 70lb device just to accomplish this. What do you think of this?

Re: AC Voltage Converter for AC

I think you better change your expectations. The only device that I know of that will convert 110 to 220 V is an isolation transformer. They may not weight 70 lbs, but they will be heavy.

Make real, real sure that your air conditioner will handle 50 hz and 60 hz. I have never seen one that can.

And get a real electrician to install it for you so that you get the grounding system right. European 220V is different from US 220V.

Re: AC Voltage Converter for AC

An isolation transformer will do it, but step up converters are fairly common. I just haven't found one for marine use yet or small enough yet. There are several AC units which will operate on both 50 and 60 hz. I have that part sourced. The ground point is a good one, I will have to think about more. But still need the voltage converted.

You can easily change the frequency of your generator to 60hz by adjusting the rpm

We all have inverters, is there an invertor that will go from 12 volt to 220 volt European ?

Re: AC Voltage Converter for AC

Ebay has them, but some of those Chinese units don't measure up to their wattage ratings.
I've got one on the boat which is great, but another one in the house which although rated at 2500 watts/24 volts, falls on its face around 2kw.
