Air X Marine Wind Turbind

I have an Air X Wind generator. When we turn it on, it starts up, the red light comes on, but then it stops abruptly. The batteries are not fully charged. If I try to brake it, I get the same result. It seems to work fine in 10 knots or less wind, but anything over that it cuts out.

We have to tie it off. Its useless at the moment.

Any suggestions?

There's a voltage adjustment screw on one side. Maybe yours is set way to low? The manual has some info on making adjustments. It sets the upper voltage limit, above which the unit brakes itself.

Re: Air X Marine Wind Turbind

Don’t forget that the cutoff voltage is measured inside the unit. This means that voltage drop in the wiring between your battery and the wind gen affects the cutoff. For example a 14 gauge wire to a wind gen 25 feet from the battery will have a drop of roughly 1.25volts.

25ft x 2 =50ft out and back
14awg is 2.5ohms/1000ft
50x2.5/1000 = .125 ohms
10A x .125 ohms = 1.25V

If the cutoff is set for 14.0 volts, the wind gen will cutout when the battery is at 12.75 volts, if there is enough breeze to provide 10 amps.
The current will drop to near zero and the voltage sense will read 12.75. After a delay the wind gen will try again and promptly cut out again.

Basically you need much larger wire than you think.
