Alternator Question

Alternator question: What are the factory Yanmar wires for?

This is from a Yanmar 3YM30 with a VALEO 125A alternator. Brand new engine/alternator mfg. in 2022

See photos - Back of factory installed VALEO alternator has 3 wires connected by Yanmar. The most obvious is "B+" which is +12V DC outgoing to your starter. The other 2 wires are "W" and "L"

"L" usually means LAMP, and here you can see blue wire with a black stripe. "W" means WAVEFORM and you can see an orange wire with blue stripes.

The "W" connection on the alternator must be for the tachometer, and the "L" connection must be for an indicator on the Yanmar control panel which is a B25.

Can someone confirm what these "L" and "W" connections really are?

I am wiring in a Balmar 618, part of the process is replacing the internal regulator on the alternator with Balmar's "Smart Ready" regulator.
The 618 comes with a wiring harness and one of the connections for that harness is a brown wire for "IGNITION" coming from the control panel.

Question is, what wire is that on the Yanmar side.

Appreciate your input on this.

Re: Alternator Question

normally on the older yanmar one is dash lamp and one is ignition 12v. but normally one is blue and one is red. and they are side by side. havn't seen an orange. googling says w is for a tach.

on other yanmars normally I can take the 2 harness wires and they become ign and lamp to the balmar. off hand I can't remember which color is which. normally I find a yanmar wiring diagram on line. you can't easily tell by testing because both go 12v with the key on. But yours seems different

if it's tach, you'll need to keep a tach output on the modified alt. it goes to the white stator wire on the balmar, then the balmar tach post gets fed to back the orange wire. the lamp wire would go to the lamp post on the balmar. you probably have to find your own ign wire in the eng harness for the balmar brown. my guess is this alt doesn't have one.

Re: Alternator Question

The L and W are standard alternater labels and are as described in your first post;

L - warning lamp/field excitation
W - wave form, providing signal to the tachometer.

Re: Alternator Question

I have the ARS-5, not the 618. I taped into the red wire with two gold stripes??? See pictures.
I sent this to a relay to power the ARS-5 to be safe and fused it separately.

Re: Alternator Question

Others have said correctly what the W and L wires are, I have always drawn power for the external regulator from the oil pressure switch post on the engine. You get confirmation of power every time you turn the key on.
