Anybody know where to get one of these (Brass Bulkhead Reading Lamp)

Hi,

Does anyone know where to get one of these brass bulkhead reading lamps?

https://imgur.com/a/N13un

I think its a model that is now 20 years old - but the one in the photo has a secondary switch on the side which is used to control fan - however this switch has seized up.

I have several of these lights on the boat and don't want to swap one as it would be odd. Also don't want to replace the whole lot.

Ideas?

Cheers

Al

How about just changing the switch?

Yeah I did think about that - don't like my chances of finding one - it looks like its molded into that little metal neck that comes out.

Install a separate switch to control the fan?

https://www.marinedepotdirect.com/reading-light-3-3-8-base-halogen-12v-15w.html"]What about this?[/URL] Not precisely the same and not just a switch, which is what you asked but very similar.

I have a half dozen of those on my 1965 Alberg 35 so if you find a source, I'ld love to know, I'm sure mine will need replacement some day.

Re: Anybody know where to get one of these (Brass Bulkhead Reading Lamp)

I'd just replace the switch. In general, lighting fixture makers don't make switches, they get them from Carling, Micro, etc. Pull the switch (or take a close photo) and search digikey or similar suppliers web sites. Auto parts vendors are another source. Looks like a rotary, but if you don't find an exact match it could be replaced with a mini toggle, push button, pull chain, whatever. Probably not more than $5 USD.

Edit: Just had a better look on my desktop, had viewed pic on phone at first. You're not saying the switch is that key looking thing? I can see two obvious switches: on back of lamp shade, presumably for the light, and on the base (soldered connection visible).

Just saw that Minnie's itself is up for sale. Don't know what that means in terms of inventory.

From the photo it looks like it has a tiny set screw holding the knob on, once removed there should be a nut under the knob. Try Digikey or mouser and others online for a replacement. There might even be a part number on the switch that is still being produced.

Re: Anybody know where to get one of these (Brass Bulkhead Reading Lamp)

It seems from the OP that the failed switch is the one on the base, not the one on the top of the shade. I agree that replacing the switch is by far the best solution. Even if you found a source for the lamp I suspect that the switch was an add-on and probably not included. I second the recommendation for Digikey and other electronics suppliers. Of course the switch doesn't have to be identical although that would be preferable.

I am in the process of gutting my brass reading lights and fitting COB LEDs and a proper regulator into each one. I have found round heatsinks and COB LEDs that fit into the area of the old Edison screw base/socket - much better than a screw-in LED "bulb" IMHO. The brass and switch is all that I am keeping from the original CCFL design. My point is that as long as the brass is in good shape the rest can easily be replaced.
