Use over time and value delivered is, of course, the correct metric.
I'll hire an electrician or diesel mechanic, but the idea of paying someone
else to do any of my many fabric projects is a non-starter.

i love the 100yo hand crank Singer and fantasized I could repair sails if
all the electrics went out, but some things should stay imaginary.
Cheers mate.

While I can't speak to all possible autopilot motors, the ones I'm familiar with (wheel drive and tiller pilots) couldn't be used for a sewing machine without a gearbox.

One of my sources for 12V DC motors is those used on electric radiator fans. The larger ones tend to have good torque/speed characteristics for thing like DIY auto pilot drives and would probably work well on a sewing machine. Other thing I like about them are they are easy to flange mount and being designed for use in an area subject to splash fairly water resistant and have good variable speed capability.
