So it looks like it would be suitable AWG for my little Pheonix inverter.

The only thing is that the pheonix wants a positive, negative and earth. I suppose I need to see if I can find a spare nearby earth wire.

Negative DC return should be earthed already.

Hey, I have a smaller inverter (600 watts if memory serves me correctly) connected via one of these plugs, works a treat.

Right, so the earth connection on the inverter would only be required if you didn't have negative to earth?

I better check the earth on our boat - I recall reading somewhere it could be to the block or to the grounding plate on the outside of the hull (SSB).

Lots of equipment that specs an earth for the case works fine without it, or just bridge from there to negative maybe?

Rubber-wheeled vehicles have no true earth.

DC negative usually tied into engine block, but galvanic corrosion issues on a boat. . .
