Good point, Stu. I didn't know Victron battery monitors were so cheap. I think I paid closer to $300, but that was 2009. It seemed a lot for such a tiny Link meter. But as you so correctly point out, it's a lot cheaper to have good battery instrumentation than to spend $3,000 (what I paid) to replace what was probably a still usable 600Ah battery bank.
