I decided to try the lithium thing and bought a system with two batteries with built in BMS and a good charger. One of the lithiums died when I hooked it up to a load and the cost of that one battery would have allowed me to replace all my LA batteries one and one half times.

I intended to use the lithiums in series to run my fridge on 24 volt so I was able to salvage the project by running it on 12v and it seems to be working OK and hopfully will still be doing so in 10 years time.

They're very attractive but the capital risk is much higher than the old LAs.
