Re: Boiling water efficiently

Interesting discussion but I skipped most of it after the first few, so I apologize for any duplication.

One of the admiral and my differences is that I measure (easy enough, particularly when I'm either boiling for a 2-mug french press, or a mug of tea), using either the FP or the mug itself.

Two benefits: minimal energy expended (why boil more water than needed?) and no need to watch for overfill when decanting.

It also means that the water we carry lasts longer (no waste, no standing overfilled remainder in container).

One of my pet peeves; she just fills the pot and then uses only a mug's-worth (about half the pot), wasteful on both levels above...

@Simi: thanks for that—I agree, the additional charging capacity is well worth the extra.

Boiling the minimum amount of water needed is normally important for energy efficiency. With the vacuum insulated kettles it is less critical. Any excess water stays almost the temperature for a reasonable length of time (many hours). Little of the energy that is used boiling excess water is wasted.

It also means you can have an additional cup without having to reboil.

No more shouting at crew for wasting energy .

There is a downside though. I find stored hot water tastes not so great, for example in a thermos. I haven’t tried these kettles though.
