Can anyone identify this?

I am in the process of updating the electrical on my boat. As you can probably see it is the wild west right now. This thing is not in the wiring diagram in the manual and I.am.not sure what it is. I should probably know so I can get the right wire sizes.

Re: Can anyone identify this?

I'm assuming this isn't a diesel? ... That looks like an ignition coil above it so maybe an ignition coil noise filter?

A noise suppressor is my guess as well.

There’s a label on it, why didn’t you photograph that?

I think the wires from it go to the alternator, but also can’t quite tell.

Have you told us what sort of motor it is? Is that confidential?

Re: Can anyone identify this?

It is a large capacitor.
Why is it there?
Perhaps it tries to prevent a voltage sag when starting or maybe it’s a noise filter.

Neat old motor. I do not know a thing about them. Sometimes the Smokestak forum is good for those old ones.

+1
Used to be very common on gasoline car engines. Cuts out the whine from the alternator that was picked up by the radio.

Re: Can anyone identify this?

Oh that really looks to me like a screw terminal electrolytic capacitor.
The guesses of a filter for ignition or alternator whine are spot on.

And no that’s not a made up term from a science fiction movie . Though it sounds like it!

I think the last one I replaced was around 40 years ago but I'm pretty sure it went between the positive coil connection and ground.

Re: Can anyone identify this?

I make a bunch of typos. I was wondering if the OP had traced the leads back. I would have to agree with the electrolytic capacitor for noise suppression but who knows. Anything added is always suspect.
