Convert internally regulated Beta alt to external

I have a 150 amp alt on my Beta 50 charging 4x6v lifeline AGMs.
I would like to convert the alt to external regulation.
What make is this alt and can it be converted, and is it worth doing?

It looks like a Bosch Universal and why do you want to convert it to external regulator. If it is a Bosch Universal a set pf brushes with external terminals which replaces the internal regulator is available.

Wouldn't imagine it would be much different:

Talk to the Beta guys about a brush kit. They sold me one for the Iskra alternator on my Beta 50.

Re: Convert internally regulated Beta alt to external

I believe that mine is a 120 amp Mahle alternator.
Will contact Beta.
Will eternally regulated make charging that much faster?

Re: Convert internally regulated Beta alt to external

Sorry, what you are looking for is a brush block, not a brush kit. External regulation will cut down on the motor time required to charge the batteries by using a charging voltage that varies with time, rather than a constant voltage.

Re: Convert internally regulated Beta alt to external

I've done this on a similar alternator. I opened it up and found brought a lead out through the back plate from the excitation brush on the rotor. I have that connected to A Sterling external regulator. It charges much quicker than the standard auto charge rate.

Yep, done this once on a Nikendenso on a Yanmah engine. Used a 12V motor speed controller to supply the adjustable excitation current and monitored the alternator output voltage and adjusted it back manually as the voltage rose.

Re: Convert internally regulated Beta alt to external

If all you re looking to do is keep a starting battery charged, internal regulation is fine. If you want to charge your house bank, do yourself a big favor and get a good external regulator, and learn how to program it.
