Converting Alt to external regulation - Have I got this right?

I'm trying to fit a WS500 external alternator regulator to a Valeo alternator, the alternator is a N type.

I have the correct N - Type loom for the regulator so its just a case of (I think) disconnecting the existing regulator and wiring in the new.

The brushes are built into the internal regulator so I plan to leave it in place, just disconnected.

Using a multi-meter I've ascertained that the lower brush (as installed looking down from the pics shown) is the positive, as there is no resistance between it & the brown wire on the regulator, the black wire has around 120k of resistance to the same brush & no continuity at all with the - brush. Which to my admittedly basic understanding makes sense as its an N-type and the reg should be just before the ground.

So my long winded question is, to add a field wire for my external regulator do I just leave the positive wire on the existing regulator as it already connects to the proper brush, disconnect the black negative from it & insulate it & finally solder a wire onto the negative brush, this will be my field wire?

Also, do I need to power my W terminal from the alt warning light any more? As the regulator has a warning light output I presume it doesn't need the excitation current?

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Midday Sun,

I am looking to do the same. Have you come up with an answer to your questions?

Thanks, Tom

You might find some help here...

P. 56 http://www.devill.net/Infos/Electric...orhandbook.pdf

The external regulator functions like an automatic manual alternator controller. You could leave the existing regulator in place or remove it.

I was unable to get it to work correctly.
In the end I picked up a Alternator to Battery Charger very cheap & fitted that instead.

Study these directions for a 200ah or 160ah Delco Remy conversion to external regulation, it will be similar.

That does not look right, go to the beginning evm posts.
