Cummins Onan 9MDKBK Spec F Generator Shutting down

Hello,

The Cummins Onan 9MDKBK Spec F generator we have has roughly 13,000hrs. We have recently had issues with it shutting down. With Codes 36, 32, 15, and 13. We have changed fuel filter and racor water separator filter. Water and exhaust flow seem to be ok. Also changed the Control assembly. Believing that with the older age of the generator that the control wasn't telling the motor to increase RPM under load. The generator tends to run overnight with little issue. During the day when the main engine is on and we are operating the boat the generator is shutting down still. We have tried to decrease the load of electricity by running with less of our equipment turned out with no success. Drawing roughly 15 amps from a marine a/c, small 120v fridge, 120v freezer, battery charger and a 120v stand alone a/c. Fuel pump on generator seems to be working, can hear it come on while priming the engine. But no other tests to the pump have been made. We also isolated the batteries. Generator battery has it's own switch and the house battery being charged by the generator is on it's own switch.

Looking for some suggestions on what to try next.

Thanks!

Sounds as though you know what you are doing but have you had a look at this link?

I think it is this part (item 10) on page 31. It was on mine (cut off solenoid). I am looking up the set up and continuity and test procedure.

Procedure I used is shown here-

Re: Cummins Onan 9MDKBK Spec F Generator Shutting down

Gen side DKD service manual shows Engine Control operation and parts. Page 2-2 shows the K1 solenoid (K1) but it is not annotated on the call out picture. Error for ONAN not to do that. Too big for me to upload.

You may have more recent generator (ours is 1991). So maybe the solenoid K1 is not used in your case.

Also, at 800 hours that Kubota block gets its 1st valve lash adjustment (0.007 inches). I just reached that value, had some ticking, did the adjustment, and now quiet again (for a generator). Reused valve cover gasket. Be careful not to loose the sealing copper washers under the 3 hold down cap nuts that secure the valve cover to the head.
