Oh, good grief. Was it really worth the effort to post that as I said on SAILBOATS? Ok, here you go. 99.95% of those who read this post have really, really small engines compared to motor vehicles.

I thought useful for the OP.... who asked for opinion about the CONCEPT of dual-purpose batteries.

Absolutely not. If your house bank is ever getting that low then it is below 25% SOC and woefully inadequate. Your best bet then is not a starting battery, it's to properly size your house bank. For example, by removing your starting bank and replacing it with more house capacity.

I get your point about having redundancy, but you can do that by having two house banks combined into one unless there is a problem with one of the banks. A low-voltage alarm is much, much cheaper and easier than a dedicated starting bank and all the associated extras.
