Is there a fuel solenoid in the injector pump? If so then you just have to be able to turn it's power off and on (switch / key) to disable / enable fuel flow. Westy's use that approach but I don't know about Perkins.

How do you stop the engine today? most diesels have a simple pull cable arrangement such as this:

+1 for this method. We went to it after our electric one on the Yanmar went kaput and I did not want to have an electrical failure in the future. Now it's just pull for the fuel shut off and no solenoid to go bad.

I'm with you, simple is better. I only have a solenoid on my engine because it came with it, a length of twine and a simple spring will replace it when it pukes.

Have a Perkins 4-107 It uses a push pull cable routed to the cockpit. The engine and boat are a 1973 vintage. Original equipment. No electricity needed.

That's what I originally planned but was told the marine environment would quickly corrode it.

But I notice I can buy SS Bicycle brake cable for about $6. I think that's the way to go. If it doesn't work I haven't burned my bridges.


(NOTE I have just picked up a SS Motor Cycle throttle cable for $A2.32 on eBay!)

Your cable will be fine, but even if it’s SS, I’d put oil down it.
Your throttle cable does OK doesn’t it?

A bike cable will only work in pull mode. A Morse (Bowden) cable works in both directions. If the return spring on the shutdown lever breaks, you have no control over it with a bike cable.


Sometimes cheaper isn't.

I like the motor bike cable lubricators. Basically a coulpe of small block that clamp around the end of the cable. They have some rubber/ silicone seal in them. Then get your favourite light lubricant spray can with a straw. The straw fits snug into a rubber sealed drilling. Then just blast your Corrosion X, or what ever, from the top till it comes out the bottom end.

Did some digging and found some pics of my installation on a large Ford Dover engine. Kill switch is standard Mercruiser item and operates the fuel shut off lever in place of a cable. This one is wired so that power operates the soleniod shutting off the fuel. A switch on the dash also supplied power to shut the engine down without having to operate the kill switch.

Same idea applies to the air intake with a soleniod, just keep fingers away when they operate, the words mouse trap spring to mind.
