Re: Dockhand plugged my 30A 120 into 30A 250

Thanks. Would this one work and be safe? Meet ABYC? What else is needed?
I see a little push button next to the power supply cord, probably the CB.

Lind Electronics makes good transformers for many types of laptops.

They sure will. Read the manual here:

Jumper settings on pages 5 and 6

Bottom of the specification page 10

"These transformers can be used as:

115V to 115V isolation transformers
230V to 230V isolation transformers
115v to 230V isolation transformers
230V to 115V isolation transformers

Re: Dockhand plugged my 30A 120 into 30A 250

Please stop using the word "electrolysis". It has absolutely nothing to do with corrosion and is just a catchy term that some dock talkers and hair removal people latched on to.

It's quite simple, on a boat you are dealing with "galvanic corrosion" or "stray current corrosion". Please do not take advice on electrical matters from those who use the term"electrolysis".

For those who don't believe me or those that want to learn I suggest you try the Wikipedia definition which is actually not too bad or do some research on the NACE website.

Agreed, getting hysterical over semantics doesnt make sense. The term Electrolysis is used extensively throughout the entire marine industry. Yes, Galvanic corrosion is ALSO used. Means the same thing and has nothing to do with hair dressers. Calm down. Many very knowledgeable and trusted people use the term and I will take advice from them.

If you trust the educated people Like NACE, US Department of Energy or even ABYC, you would not use the term.
Actually electrolysis is the reverse of galvanic corrosion.... hardly semantics.

Is there any miscommunication, actual harm done by such lack of precision in this particular word choice?

Stabilise ? CVT, or rectifier-inverter ?

Electrolosis is the result of electric current influencing the chemical composition of stuff. Each half cycle of AC can be considered as DC, as whatever it removes from one "plate" gets scattered rather than transfered to the other "plate".

Would you rather hire a Certified Marine Electrician who knows the science of what he is doing or one who picked up his education from other dock talkers.

Yes, damage is quite routine by "electricians" who improperly install inverters, chargers and who don't understand neutral/ground bonding, cathodic bonding protection, the difference between stray current corrosion, galvanic corrosion and a host of other electrical processes, each with their own terminology.

Sometimes this ignorance results in fatalities. try reading up on ESD (Electric Shock Drowning)

Balderdash!!! I am a retired electronics engineer and I will talk about current flow or hole flow interchangeabley. Hertz or CPS. the list goes on. Language is for communication and is NOT an art form...despite what the French think......If communication takes place then the job is done. Its like the Spelling Nazis who think a letter out of place is the end of the world. I worked in Atomic weapons where a mistake could be the end of the world but we were not so OCD as this.

Knowledge is not equatable to skill with english.

Think about what electrolysis is. It is a potential across and electrolyte, salt water being the electrolyte. My education my be a little dated but I doubt the physics involved have changed. Training may refer to it as galvanic corrosion as a term. It is corrosion from a galvanic reaction caused by electrolysis. JMHO

You could always hire this girl to take care of your electrolysis issues.

Re: Dockhand plugged my 30A 120 into 30A 250

Your problem is the evolution of language. I used to get upset with people calling themselves "Programmers" when they manipulated a program like"Excel" for others. Iwas a programmer when it meant entering ones and zeros to create a program like Excel. I didnt like the "inflation of terms" because it belittiled mywork. BUT I GOT OVER IT and went with the evolution of language. You, however, dont like being equated to "this girl". OK, get over it. Electrolysis is an accepted term for the process. Do you think your mechanic that services your Jaguar is any less capable because he uses "F***ing" in every other sentence? English is NOT the be all and end all of languages. Yes even the French, that dont even speak English, are educated!!
