Finally the ABYC will go for isolated DC installations!

A couple decades late but it’s happening

Good to see at least some progress. A fairly complicated topic if one includes the various types of faults. For instance on the thruster diagram above. That install ought to include a higher safety spec for the batt charger. Primary to secondary faults will be more dangerous if not considered.
Medical rated power devices worry with this, as an example.

Bravo, kind of reminds me of a quote attributed to Winston Churchill.
Paraphrasing,
"The US generally does the right thing, after it has exhausted all other possibilities".

I agree, but for all new equipment this is already the case for at least 20 years. They have to for their UL rating. Even on circuit boards there is a wide, required separation zone. Of course the primary isolation is the electromagnetic field of the transformer.

MOOP describes operator protection in medical environments. I would submit that one working with 12V in a salty environment would also enjoy such a rating. As you eliminate the shock advantage of earthed conductors, it moves the requirement for added insulation/isolation upstream.

Re: Finally the ABYC will go for isolated DC installations!

They should have done this from the day they required a separate conductor for DC negative instead of using the steel hull.

I couldn’t watch the latest distant shores episode, throwing all bonding and grounding systems on one heap. At least they got the isolation transformer… I think as I didn’t watch the rest of it.

I have noticed most people don’t understand circuit return paths and the role of ground/earth and things like chassis ground, RF ground, bonding for lightning protection etc.

Well the bulletin included an invitation to attend Standards Week in Annapolis.
If you come, the first Pusser's Painkiller is on me.

Thank you but I’d need a bit more than a Pusser’s Painkiller to get back into that :-)

Also, it’s not needed, they can just copy some European code and be done with it haha.
