Frequency Converter

Has anyone put a frequency converter on their boat? I have a euro-wired boat, and am considering adding one. I'd like to know where you got one.... and how much it was. I have a Lagoon 450, so I'm thinking I need one around 12,000 kilowatts....

Re: Frequency Converter

That’s a HUGE and unneeded expense!

What do you have onboard that is strictly built for 50hz power?

Twelve megawatts? Either I need another coffee or you should review that calculation.

My 4 HVAC units.... They cannot continue to run off of 60 Hz as they are overheating. Also my watermaker... Microwave... Washing machine.... Inverters... Battery chargers.. But the AC units are the real concern.

I had a full Electrical assessment done yesterday by the man who teaches the marine electrical classes at the Annapolis School of Seamanship and he was very concerned about my HVAC systems because they are running really really hot.. It's a fire hazzards...

Frequency Converter

Just to give you a quick idea about what you’re looking for.

This is a 3kva unit (first thing I was able to find with a price).

Costs would be less to replace the existing 50hz air conditioners with 50/60 he compliant units. Run everything else off of the inverter.

I have 2 inverters, but if my understanding is correct, the inverter does not convert Hz....

Re: Frequency Converter

Swap out the single phase compressors to 3ph and install variable frequency drives.

The inverters don’t change frequency, they provide A/C power from the batteries.

The most cost effective for you (with limited information) seems to be use a universal input battery charger to charge the batteries, a native (to the boat) output inverter, and frequency tolerant air conditioners.

If your existing setup is an inverter/charger combo you’ll need to look at equipment additions here as well.

All in though you’re less expensive and more compact than a freq converter.

I’ll eat shoes if that can be done on a self contained AC unit for less than a new unit.
